Balearic Tourist Tax
The Balearic Government has approved an eco tax per person per day on Hotel, Villa and Apartment holidays. You will be required to pay Balearic Tourist Tax for your stay in Menorca. This is calculated at 2€ per night per visitor over 16 years of age, for the first 9 nights and this then reduces to 1€ per visitor per night for the remainder of your holiday. The total amount is subject to IVA. MPO will on behalf of the property owner add this amount to your final invoice. The authorities want to use the money to help protect the Balearics and fund marine projects to make the island more attractive.
Sean Tipton of ABTA said
"It’s important the islands do everything they can to preserve their environment – but discouraging tourists could be a very unwelcome and unintended consequence.” He told the Telegraph ABTA has written to the Balearic authorities for clarification on where money raised by these sustainable tourism taxes will be spent and which sustainability projects will benefit from them. " I think most holidaymakers will understand the tax if a country is trying to find ways to improve its facilities but it must demonstrate it is doing this and that the taxes will be applied to marine projects,"
