The central location of this country house means that you are less than five minutes from both the north and south coast beaches.

The pretty town of Es Mercadel is at the foot of Mount Toro, which stand at 357m and is Menorca’s highest point is close by. The town is very pretty with its white washed houses, quiet narrow streets and small bridges give it a feeling of time gone by. There is a main plaza and a good selection of banks, shops, quality restaurants and great local bars full of atmosphere and Meson Rias Baixas is the best restaurant for puelpo a la Galiega
 
Es Mercadal is known for its excellent food and it is still possible to taste typical Menorcan dishes in many different restaurants in the town: oliaigo amb figues (vegetable soup with figs), albergínies plenes (stuffed aubergines), carabassons plens (stuffed courgettes), calamars plens (stuffed squid) etc.
 
There is also a small local handicraft industry making avarcas, typical sandals, which historically were worn, by all the country folk and farmer, but now these shoes are very popular and come in a variety of different colours and designs.

The central location of Es Mercadal means that you are close to both the north and south coast beaches, to the south the nearest is the quiet beach resorts of  Santo Tomas, with it long white sandy beaches and excellent beach bar/restaurant, also along this very pretty stretch of coastline are the unspoilt beaches of Sant Adeodat, Binigaus and the deserted end of Son Bou reachable via a stunning headland walk.
 
To the north there are the beautiful and stunning unspoilt beaches of Cala Pregonda and Binimel-la.

These areas are an environmentally protected UNESCO heritage stretch of coast line and perfect for walking, bird watching, painting and photography. 

This is a very quiet and peaceful part of Menorca with numerous trails suitable for walking and cycling and, well worth a visit, is the near-by ‘Cova des Coloms’ - approximately 24 metres high and some 15 metres wide.
 
Fornells is a ten-minute drive away and has a beautiful harbor with a palm tree lined promenade where you will find clusters of quality restaurants serving the well known culinary delight 'Caldereta de Langosta' (Lobster soup) and local bars most of which overlook the breathtaking natural bay (4km long x 2km wide) with several sandy beaches and activities such as windsurfing and dinghy sailing.

Mahón and its harbour are less than twenty minutes by car, the esplanade along the waterfront invites you to stroll along and discover its endless variety of quality boutiques, galleries, shops, bars and restaurants and offers something for all tastes and budgets.  Because it is still a working port it has a wonderful atmosphere with unique character.

The best way to see Mahón is by foot as you wander through its labyrinth of streets, you will discover stunning architecture, beautiful churches, wonderful markets, and quality shops where the produce on sale speaks for itself as wells as a fantastic choice of quality restaurants and great local bars.
Ciutadella is again a twenty minute drive and was originally the island's capital until the early 18th century when it was transferred to Mahón.  A wonderful combination of grand palaces, mansions, beautiful churches, impressive town squares, narrow twisting streets and the old port.
