An Interview with Bambu

14th May 2020

During our time in lockdown we’ve got in touch with a few of our favourite restaurants on the island because simply, we miss them! We thought it would be a good opportunity to get to know the masterminds behind the amazing food we love to eat whilst on our holidays. When travel to the beautiful island becomes possible again, we must show our support for the local businesses and enjoy a meal or two in these fantastic restaurants.

This week we got in touch with the owners of Bambu located in the lovely village of Binibeca Vell. This restaurant offers mouthwatering food inspired by Asian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist, or if you’re not looking to go for food, they also offer a great selection of refreshing cocktails, which can be enjoyed with jaw-dropping sea views as your backdrop.

We know Bambu is where to go for a drink/meal with a view but we wanted to know more and understand what inspired the owners to open Bambu.

What inspired you to open Bambu?

After traveling around the world and discovering Asia in its most interesting facets, we wanted to bring and share a piece of our best memories, experience and flavours we have found globally, here in Menorca where we live.

How would you describe the style of your food? What has had the greatest influence over the food you serve?

Asian inspired, Mediterranean influenced sharing tapas plates and meals freshly prepared and cooked using our Robata Grill and other traditional cooking techniques. We focus on giving our guests fresh and local quality produce.

What is your most popular dish at Bambu?

Our selection of sharing dishes is a favourite; our steamed Bao Bun with pulled pork and steamed chicken gyozas for example quickly became the most requested dishes, photographed and shared in social networks.

Thai style salt & pepper squid, salt cod croquetas, corvina ceviche,  BBQ chicken wings, Thai prawn baby gem cups, tuna tartare and Japanese steak tartare were highly appreciated as well.

Jumping on the main courses, stir fried vegetable noodles with prawns or chicken are also very popular but also the cod in Dashi and Miso marinated beef were delicious and much appreciated.

How do you want your customers to feel when they visit Bambu?

Our goal is that the customer feels free to live a complete all day experience with multiple areas to enjoy. We offer a vibrant, chilled and laid back environment complete with stunning sea and sunset views, an interesting culinary offer, good chill music, where they can create unforgettable memories with their loved ones.

Bambú is a large capacity venue comprising multiple intimate, distinct and separate areas:

There is an upper deck terrace and cocktail bar for both drinking & dining. A chill-out mid-terrace with a few day beds. A "zen” garden complete with old Marés flower beds holding perfumed Jasmine, beautiful Bougainvillea with intimate seating and a soothing water cascade.

A separate restaurant downstairs also complete with large bar and sliding doors opening out to a fantastic sea view.

Why did you choose Binibeca as the location for the restaurant?

We are deeply in love with Menorca and Binibeca represents a magical place on the south coast with a wonderful old fisherman’s settlement (Binibeca Vell)   and the home of the much loved Binibeca Beach. Bambú Menorca is positioned a short way between the beach and the village.

So we imagined a perfect summer day - a morning relaxing on the beach, a walk through its narrow white streets in Binibeca Vell and then ending a perfect day at Bambu to dine, drink, chill, celebrate and simply enjoy. We immediately realised that Binibeca was the perfect location for our dream project and we made it a reality. We also can't forget the mention the stunning views of the Mediterranean.

What is your message to the tourists who cannot travel to Menorca this year due to the coronavirus?

First of all we would like to give everyone a virtual hug! We are in this together and we are sure better days are coming.

On the other hand, we would like to inform we are already taking all those health and safety measures with the aim of not only preventing but minimising risks to human health in Bambú.

Sending love to all of you and we can't wait to see you again on the island and celebrate together.
