Ciutadella’s old town is a spectacular location known for its narrow streets, ancient buildings and impressive architecture. Take a stroll through the Plaça des Born, the main square, where you can admire the grandiose Town Hall and the obelisk. Wander through the labyrinthine streets, lined with beautiful palaces and churches, such as the Cathedral of Menorca and the Church of Roser.
Ciutadella was Menorca’s capital until 1722 when Mahon officially became the island's new capital. It remained the island’s religious centre, however, and there are several must-visit historic sites in the town. Visit the impressive Santa Maria Castle, a 17th-century fortress that offers panoramic views of the town and the sea. Explore the ancient walls and bastions and immerse yourself in the town's fascinating past. Another significant site is the Naveta d'es Tudons, a prehistoric burial chamber located just outside of Ciutadella, which dates back to the Bronze Age.
The picturesque Port of Ciutadella is a vibrant area bustling with activity. Here, you can watch the fishing boats come and go, enjoy a leisurely walk along the waterfront promenade, or relax at one of the charming cafes and restaurants. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the harbour, a truly magical experience.
No visit to this historic town is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Explore Ciutadella’s markets, such as the Mercat des Peix (Fish Market) and Mercat de Sant Joan, where you can sample fresh seafood, local cheeses and delicious pastries. Treat yourself to a traditional Menorcan meal featuring dishes like lobster stew, sobrassada (a local sausage) and the famous Mahón cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or the popular Menorcan gin, Xoriguer. Ciutadella’s restaurants and nightlife ensures a wonderful evening out with fantastic establishments offering food and drink menus from across the globe. If it’s shopping you love, Ciutadella’s shops and clothing boutiques are some of the best on the island.
Menorca is known for its vibrant festivals and traditions, and if you're lucky, you might see its most famous, Ciutadella’s Fiesta de Sant Joan on 23rd and 24th June every year, which features exciting events such as the Jaleo, where beautiful black horses parade through the streets while locals attempt to touch their hearts. The festival culminates in a grand firework display, creating a lively and unforgettable atmosphere, which is free of charge to attend.
Ciutadella is also blessed with some of the most stunning beaches in Menorca. Two of Ciutadella’s closest beaches are Cala Algaierens and Cala en Blanes, while just a short drive or bus ride away are the stunning Playa de Son Saura, Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta, with crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sandy shores. Spend a day sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling in these idyllic coves. For a quieter and more secluded experience, other beaches near Ciutadella are Cala Turqueta or Cala Mitjana, both hidden gems with pristine natural beauty.
